Woerden - 01/08/2006 - Each year, the dominoes of Domino Day are recycled. Using the stones of a previous world record attempt is not possible. They get damaged too much to be used once more.Old dominoes are grinded and recycled into garbage bags and other everyday household goods.
For this year's edition of Domino Day 4.4 million dominoes are ordered. Our designers use 24 different coloured dominoes and a transparant edition. At the beginning of the design process it’s unknown how many stones of each colour are needed. The initial order is therefore determined by looking at historical data of previous world records.
The manufacturer has started with the production of the dominoes in April. A custom production line has been created to be able to produce the perfect domino. Material, size, weight and the colour of the dominoes are important aspects, which determine the eventual quality. The most important aspect is the speed of the domino. This has to be exactly right to make the total length of the domino trail fit within the planned duration of the television show.
At this moment the last part of the 4.4 million dominoes is produced. The painting process for a substantial part of the total order has started. Painting the dominoes enables us to create nice image-transitions, when the dominoes topple.
